Introduction

Our flying school offers the highest quality of training for students. There are two approved Private Pilots courses available to you, both of which are offered at Westair. We also offer additional advanced training to further your skills.

JAR-PPL

Ground Brief

The principal course is the standard JAR (Joint Aviation Regulations) - PPL, which consists of a minimum of 45 hours flying. Lessons usually last between 40 minutes and an hour. If you train full time, the course can be completed in between 2 or 3 months, but many people spread the course over 12 to 18 months, taking lessons roughly once a week.

Topics of the PPL course include:

  • Basic Handling
  • Circuit training
  • Navigation
  • Stall Recovery
  • Practice Forced Landings and emergency procedures

Requirements

  • 45 hours total flying time
  • 25 hours dual instruction
  • 10 hours of solo flight
  • 5 hours solo cross country
  • 1 cross country trip at least 150nm, landing at 2 other aerodromes
  • 1 hour instrument appreciation
  • Class 2 Aviation Medical (completed before flying solo) (click here for a list of Medical Examiners)
  • 7 Multiple Choice Ground Exams
  • Radio Telephany Practical Exam
  • General Handling Skills Test

NPPL

The alternative route is the NPPL (National Private Pilot's Licence). The NPPL covers the same topics as the JAR- PPL but benefits from having slightly lower requirements, the minimum flying time is only 32 hours and only a doctor's certificate from your own GP is required. However, the NPPL does have fewer privileges. The licence is only valid in the UK and the weather must be more suitable to fly. Additional ratings such as IMC or night ratings cannot be added.

Requirements

  • 32 hours total flying time
  • 22 hours dual instruction
  • 10 hours of solo flight
  • 4 hours solo cross country
  • 1 cross country trip at least 100nm, landing at 2 other aerodromes
  • Medical Certificate signed by GP (completed before flying solo) (click here to download a form)
  • 7 Multiple Choice Ground Exams
  • Radio Telephany Practical Exam
  • Navigation Skills Test
  • General Handling Skills Test

Night Rating

The Night Rating is a rating which can be obtained during or after your PPL course and as the name suggests, allows you to fly at night. Flying at night, you can see the landscape transform as the sunsets and the city lights slowly switch on.

Topics of the Night rating course include:

  • Night familiarisation and preparation
  • Night circuits
  • Night navigation
  • Emergency scenarios at night

Requirements

  • 5 hours night flying
  • 5 take offs and landings at night.

IMC Rating

Once you've obtained your PPL and probably before you will encounter frustration as flights are cancelled due to bad weather. The IMC rating allows the holder to fly in less than perfect weather.

Topics of the IMC course include:

  • Basic Instrument Flying
  • Instrument Flying with limited panel
  • Recovery from unusual attitudes on full and limited panel
  • Position fixes and instrument let downs

Requirements

  • 15 hours flying including 10 hours with sole reference to the instruments.
  • 20 hours ground instruction
  • 1 ground exam
  • 1 Skills test
