Competency Based IR
An abbreviated Instrument Rating for pilots with previous experience.
Course Details
A pre-entry assessment is used to determine the individual’s training needs.
At least 10 hours of instrument flight time under instruction in an aeroplane.
The SE CB-IR course comprises of at least 40 hours instrument time under instruction (including prior instruction credited)
The ME CB-IR course comprises of at least 45 hours instrument time under instruction (including prior instruction credited)
About the course
The Competency Based IR (CBIR) is a relatively new course. It is, for all intents and purposes the same as the full instrument rating with the same fundamental requirements completion standards. Once complete you will receive either a single engine or a multi engine instrument rating just like the full course.
The main benefit of the CBIR is for pilots that have a significant amount of Instrument flying experience. After an assessment flight
Pre-entry Requirements
Hold a PPL(A) or a CPL(A) or an ATPL in another aircraft category
Hold at least a class two medical
ICAO Level 4 English language proficiency
Completed all required theoretical knowledge examinations (FCL.615)
50 hours of cross-country flight as PIC of which at least 10 must be in aeroplanes
Have completed the pre-requisites for the issue of an MEP (land) class rating (ME IR only)
